La Vielle Ferme (The Old Farm) was an entry-level label developed by Famille Perrin in 1970. Hard to imagine that it’s been with us for more than half a century. Now it appears to be more popular than ever.

That’s easy enough to comprehend. With prices on everything going up month after month, La Vieille Ferme (aka “The Chicken Wine”) represents a more old-world sensibility that wine should be a standard on the dinner table. At its current sale price, the argument is well-made.

This blend of four lesser-known white grapes is an education in what a skilled winery can produce with grapes not seen as the most noble.

It’s not just aromatic with pear, apple, white flowers and other orchard fruit, but it delivers a remarkable balance between acidity and fruit on the palate. There’s even some creaminess that may remind you of bananas.

While you enjoy letting your palate roam through the orchard, there’s a throughline of lemon that reminds you how versatile this wine can be.

Sure it’s perfectly fine as a patio sipper, but it’s a workhorse for a variety of meals. Enjoy it with the bird on the label, either roasted or pan-seared or have it with baked white fish in a white sauce with chervil.

This budget-friendly wine is always ready to wow you with what it delivers for the price. It’s certainly not complex but the fruit is always identifiable and the experience is never insipid.

Buy a test bottle, then a case at the sale price, and enjoy it throughout the year.

Price: Sale price $11.95 (Reg. $13.95) until May 24.
